again. the health care reform is called the "public option."

millions of americans are withouth health insurance because without a good job, private insurance is crazy expensive. the govt. is preparing to provide an alternative. does anyone honestly think the govt. could take out private insurance companies leaving us helpless patriots without a "choice"?

screw insurance anyway! why do these morons have such an unflinching love for corporations who profit off their misfortune?? it's just another form of gambling where the house always wins. and most readers here know i would much prefer to waste that money scratching scratch tickets.

nancy pelosi might be scary looking but she's certainly not a nazi... enough with the nazi references people. they (nazi's) exterminated 6 million jews. we (anyone with a brain larger than a peanut) are talking about providing health care to all that need it in the richest country in the world.

cat massage.

Can you roll me one of those cowboy?

This is a sort of under the radar documentary Scorsese made in the late seventies featuring his friend, ex-drug addict, roadie for Neal Diamond, gun salesman in Taxi Driver, and above all a classic New York character who had more than a few stories to tell. See if anything he says seems familiar...

It starts around 2:30 and lasts about a minute, but it's better if you watch all the dialogue leading up to it.

now, i don't usually waste my keystrokes with sports stories, (i prefer mindless, political character assasinations as our #1 reader hoodwinked pointed out), but this story really bit me.

some crazy ncaa cats are throwing memphis' final four season straight down the memory hole!

the reason?

derek rose, current nba star, had someone else take his s.a.t for him. big deal, i was stoned as hell when i took the s.a.t and still got an 1140 sukkas..

bottom line: the only reason rose went to college is because the nba's facist rules dictate a player must spend one year in college. more, this same thing happened to coach calipari when he took umass to the final four in 1996! you can't erase a fukking season people...

Lou Roe must be rolling over in his bag of nacho cheesier dorritos..

An alternative Big Mac Index

Aug 20th 2009

How many minutes to earn the price of a Big Mac?

THE size of your pay packet may be important, but so is its purchasing power. Helpfully, a UBS report published this week offers a handy guide to how long it takes a worker on the average net wage to earn the price of a Big Mac in 73 cities. Fast-food junkies are best off in Chicago, Toronto and Tokyo, where it takes a mere 12 minutes at work to afford a Big Mac. By contrast, employees must toil for over two hours to earn enough for a burger fix in Mexico City, Jakarta and Nairobi.

mmm...big mac. I wonder if there is any correlation to bmi and big mac per hour index. note that nairobi has no weight problem. Chicago...I dunno.

Democrats grow a pair

from the NYT

August 19, 2009
Democrats Seem Set to Go It Alone on a Health Bill
WASHINGTON — Given hardening Republican opposition to Congressional health care proposals, Democrats now say they see little chance of the minority’s cooperation in approving any overhaul, and are increasingly focused on drawing support for a final plan from within their own ranks.

Top Democrats said Tuesday that their go-it-alone view was being shaped by what they saw as Republicans’ purposely strident tone against health care legislation during this month’s Congressional recess, as well as remarks by leading Republicans that current proposals were flawed beyond repair.

Rahm Emanuel, the White House chief of staff, said the heated opposition was evidence that Republicans had made a political calculation to draw a line against any health care changes, the latest in a string of major administration proposals that Republicans have opposed.

“The Republican leadership,” Mr. Emanuel said, “has made a strategic decision that defeating President Obama’s health care proposal is more important for their political goals than solving the health insurance problems that Americans face every day.”

Hopefully this is a sign of things to come, credit to Emanuel for finally saying what everyone has been thinking.

Obama is spineless

I didn't know allowing republicans, blue dog democrats, and insurance companies control the new health care policy is change we can believe in.

Looks like we've lost our public option. Our politicians are ok with bankrupting the country by bombing brown nations overseas, but a socialized health care system would apparently destroy America as we know it.

Argument #1

Assumption #1: Political arguments are founded in specific worldviews based on a combination of multiple factors both internal and external. These factors can include, but are not limited to, gender, race, nationality, education, media, sexual orientation, degree of sympathy for pinko commies, degree of unabashed patriotism, etc.

Assumption #2: These factors do not affect the party intellectuals as we are able to remove ourselves from all biases caused by "being in the midst of things". This form of objectivism is accomplished through alcohol and intellectual reasoning.

Conclusion: This is not a political blog, it is a blog based on assumption #2, for #1 please Google topics such as "Is Stephen Hawking really from the UK, cause then wouldn't he be dead?", or "How paying your taxes makes you a communist".

P.S. Googling those topics may actually link you to this blog, this is a pure coincidence caused by my attempt at clarification. This link should not be accessed. The answers to these questions do not exist in the minds of the PIs

thanks jerk. now leave us alone.

Nearly all of your posts and topics I see on this site are character assinations -- NOTHING productive (i.e., logical arguments) just pure, unadulterated identity politics. People like you represent politics of the worst kind.

What's so funny -- that Obama has suggested a national security force; that members of his cabinet believe gender is an arbitrary, social construct (so therefore "manhood" and "womanhood" don't exist); that utopianism is built into the intellectual roots of Socialism? Tell me the joke.

I'd argue, but I don't sense a drop of sincerity in anything you write; so therefore it's useless.

Proof the singularity is real part 1

According to an article in the economist Scientist have been able to make a type of golgi apparatus using a digital-fluidics chip, that basically uses electricity to move chemicals to behave like a normal golgi apparatus. This thing is important I guess because it makes gene medicine behave correctly in a human even if the genes didn't come from a human, read the article for the science.

What is important is that it demonstrates how close we are getting to having robot versions of cells with in us, doing their own bidding. Terminator and the matrix got it all wrong. Robots will take over from the inside like a cancer.

you make the call pt. 79: REAL or FAKE?

Barry Lyndon

I don't know how I slept on this on this film for so long, especially considering Kubrick is one of my favorite directors. An epic, slow moving, three-hour period piece, Barry Lyndon unsurprisingly failed at the box office, and was met with mixed reviews from critics, who praised the visual technique and attention to detail but criticized the film as a whole. I was aware that as time passed critics had warmed to the film more and more, with it landing on a handful of to 100 films lists in the past decade. However, it wasn't until I stumbled across a couple quotes; Scorsese calling it Kubrick's best film and Brain Eno stating that he considered it the greatest film he has ever seen, that I knew I couldn't put off watching it any longer.

Visually the film is gorgeous, achieved in part by Kubrick's revolutionary lighting technique: (From Wikipedia)
Barry Lyndon saw a considerable number of sequences shot "without recourse to electric light."[4] Cinematography was overseen by director of photography John Alcott (who won an Oscar for his work), and is particularly noted for the technical innovations that made some of its most spectacular images possible. To achieve photography without electric lighting "[f]or the many densely furnished interior scenes... meant shooting by candlelight," which is known to be difficult in still photography, "let alone with moving images." Kubrick was "determined not to reproduce the set-bound, artificially lit look of other costume dramas from that time."[4] After "tinker[ing] with different combinations of lenses and film stock," the production got hold of three "super-fast 50mm" F/0.70 lenses "developed by Zeiss for use by NASA in the Apollo moon landings," which Kubrick had discovered in his search for low-light solutions.[4] These super-fast lenses "[w]ith their huge aperture [the film actually features the largest lens aperture in film history] and fixed focal length" were problematic to mount[4], but allowed Kubrick and Alcott to shoot scenes lit with actual candles to an average lighting volume of only three candlepower, "recreating the huddle and glow of a pre-electrical age."

The above video is a good example of candle-lit only scene, although I'm not sure if a youtube video really does it justice. Beyond how beautiful the film is, the character arc Kubrick constructs over three hours is masterful, and has more depth than a simple rake clawing his way up in society story, which some people apparently wrote it off as. Anyway, this film is epic, go watch it.

one of their most notorius "pranks" ended with a bunch of manchester, new hampshire KFC employees urinating on eachother...

it's an interesting and fucked up story...

fuck off palin.

so sarah palin and el rushbo have been spouting off this nonsense that the govt. backed health care plan will create a "death panel" of experts to determine if one lives or dies. obviously to anyone with a shred of rationality the comments were meant to stir the republican "base", a.k.a. the elderly. of all the crap i've read this middle finger got me most excited:

"Don’t talk to me about death panels, Sarah Palin.

You, who so carelessly bolstered a lie about healthcare reform to score a cheap political point; you, the most craven of political opportunists, who fearmongers about some dystopian socialist/fascist fantasyland; you, who earlier this year were only too happy to accept free medical, dental and veterinary care from the U.S. military for Alaska’s remote villages; you, dear lady, are an idiot.

In your free market wonderland everyone somehow manages to get healthcare, even those who are poor or live in isolated areas, though the poor and isolated in your own state required assistance from the federal government.

And despite all of this, you appear blithely unaware that the free market healthcare system we have now does, indeed, have “death panels.” I’ve been part of a death panel conversation. I know about death panels.

You have no idea what it’s like to be called into a sterile conference room with a hospital administrator you’ve never met before and be told that your mother’s insurance policy will only pay for 30 days in ICU. You can't imagine what it's like to be advised that you need to “make some decisions,” like whether your mother should be released “HTD” which is hospital parlance for “home to die,” or if you want to pay out of pocket to keep her in the ICU another week. And when you ask how much that would cost you are given a number so impossibly large that you realize there really are no decisions to make. The decision has been made for you. "Living will" or no, it doesn't matter. The bank account and the insurance policy have trumped any legal document.

If this isn’t a “death panel” I don’t know what is."

Twenty-five-year-old George Vera was charged with possession of a firearm in a correctional facility after he told a guard at the Harris County Jail about the unloaded 9mm pistol. The Houston Chronicle reported Thursday that Vera was originally arrested on charges of selling illegal copies of compact discs.

The 500-pound man was searched during his arrest and again at a city jail and the county jail, but officers never found the weapon in his rolls of skin. Vera admitted having the gun during a shower break at the county jail."

America's Been Punked Or

how we keep getting fucked and have no control to change it.

Frank Rich op-ed: here

I can't imagine anyone on this board, or most liberals I know, are happy with how Obama has handled his presidency. A messy economic bailout with a team of advisers from the banks that fuck us everyday, a watered down environmental bill, the continuation of two wars paralleled with no real plan to fix Israel/Palestine, and now it looks probable the health care bill will be mediocre at best. If his supporters started being critical of his policies maybe we would start seeing some real change that was promised on the campaign trail...and some anger over how he has handled health care reform is a good place to start. But these billionaires just seem to have too much influence for us to even make a difference.

Tough Shit, Asshole

Texas Billionaire Allen Stanford on Monday filed a motion to move to a different jail, citing “oppressive” conditions at the Joe Corley Detention Facility. Stanford is being held without bond while awaiting trial on charges that he swindled investors out of $7 billion. Originally, Stanford was granted a $500,000 bond, but U.S. District Judge David Hittner revoked it, determining the financier to be a serious flight risk.

The Brief:

DEFENDANT ALLEN STANFORD, through his attorney Dick DeGuerin, brings this motion to ask the Court to immediately address oppressive jail conditions at the Joe Corley Detention Facility, respectfully showing as follows:

1. For at least a week, during the hottest part of the summer, with outside temperatures of 100 [degrees] or more, the place where Allen Stanford is being held as a pretrial detainee has had no air conditioning and for part of that time was without power altogether.

2. Allen Stanford is housed in a single cell with between eight to ten other men. For part of the time last week, they were in total darkness and so far (this motion is prepared on Sunday, July 26) the cell has been without air conditioning for at least a week. There are no windows for light or ventilation and the conditions are intolerable.

3. Allen Stanford urgently asks the Court to transfer him to the Federal Detention Center in downtown Houston run by the Bureau of Prisons and renews his request for transfer, both because of the oppressive conditions under which he is suffering, as well as the impossible conditions for preparing for his complex trial.

4. Regarding the inability of Allen Stanford to consult with his lawyers, the discovery in this case is by electronic means and none of the visiting conditions at the Joe Corley Detention Facility allow the use of electronics. Allen Stanford will be denied his constitutional right to review the evidence in his case if he is detained pretrial at the Joe Corley Detention Facility.

5. Counsel for Allen Stanford has tried to address the conditions with the Marshal’s Service and the Joe Corley Detention Facility, but thus far to no avail. See Exhibit A, a letter to United States Acting Marshal Saenz.

Respectfully Submitted,
Dick DeGuerin

dinosaur adventure land. rest in piss.

"A federal judge has cleared the way for the government's seizure of a creationism theme park in Pensacola owned by a couple convicted of tax fraud.

A ruling by U.S. District Judge Casey Rodgers states that the nine properties that make up Dinosaur Adventure Land as well as two bank accounts associated with the park will be used to satisfy $430,400 owed to the federal government.

Kent Hovind, who founded the park and a ministry, Creation Science Evangelism, is serving 10 years in federal prison for failing to pay the Internal Revenue Service more than $470,000 in employee taxes.

He was found guilty in November 2006 on 58 counts, including failure to pay employee taxes and making threats against investigators.

The conviction culminated 17 years of Hovind sparring with the IRS. Saying he was employed by God and his ministers were not subject to payroll taxes, he claimed no income or property. Hovind is incarcerated at the Edgefield Federal Correction Institution in South Carolina."

Rehab staff 'killed web addict'

A Chinese teenager sent to an internet addiction rehabilitation camp has allegedly been beaten to death by its counsellors, according to reports.

A number of employees of the Qihang Salvation Training Camp in Nanning have been arrested over the death, his father Deng Fei told the Global Times.

The camp had promised to put Deng Senshan, 15, under 24-hour supervision.

China is increasingly taking action against what it sees as a pandemic of web addiction.

Some estimates suggest up to 10% of the country's 100 million teenage web users could be addicted, and a growing number of rehabilitation services exist.

However, there is little consensus on how to treat the addiction. In July, China's Ministry of Health formally banned the use of electroshock therapy as a treatment option.

According to the China Daily newspaper, an agreement the teenagers' parents signed with the camp said: "The centre can take necessary approaches including punishment to educate the teenager, as long as the approaches will not abuse the child or impair his health."

Camp staff are alleged to have put the teenager in solitary confinement on Saturday and then beaten him that evening.

Jobless NYC woman sues college for $70K in tuition

NEW YORK – A New York City woman who says she can't find a job is suing the college where she earned a bachelor's degree.

Trina Thompson filed a lawsuit last week against Monroe College in Bronx Supreme Court. The 27-year-old is seeking the $70,000 she spent on tuition.

Thompson says she's been unable to find gainful employment since she received her information technology degree in April.

She says the Bronx school's Office of Career Advancement hasn't provided her with the leads and career advice it promises.

Monroe College spokesman Gary Axelbank says Thompson's lawsuit is completely without merit.

The college insists it helps its graduates find jobs.

Introducing Shelden Williams

Shelden Williams, the newest Celtic, had a dominant college career at Duke, winning the 2005 and 2006 NABC Defensive Player of the Year Awards, becoming only the fifth player in history to earn the award two consecutive years. He holds Duke's career blocks record, single-season blocks record, and career rebounding record, while he is 17th in career blocks on the NCAA charts. He is the third player in ACC history to have 1,500 points, 1,000 rebounds and 350 blocks (joining Tim Duncan and Ralph Sampson). His 1,217 rebounds and 1,859 career points rank him seventh in ACC history and sixteenth in Duke history, respectively.

All of this led to Williams being selected 5th overall in the 2006 NBA draft, ahead of such players as Brandon Roy and Rajon Rondo. As seen by his highlight reel posted above however, his NBA career has been bustastic (Seriously, the only two youtube videos of Shelden Williams were the one posted and this. I posted the more impressive one). At least he apparently rebounds and plays D, and its not like Baby could finish at the rim either...

From ESPN;
2007-08 season: The fifth-overall pick in 2006 has had trouble gaining career traction, with a chronic inability to finish around the basket dampening his hopes of becoming a rotation player. Williams converted only 47.8 percent of his shots in the basket area, an extremely poor rate for a big man, and since he's also mediocre at best an outside shooter (37.6 percent on long 2s for his career), it doesn't leave a lot of alternatives for where to get his points. He at least got to the line at a high rate, which helped offset that woeful 43.4 percent mark from the floor. The one thing he really does well is rebound. Williams was eighth among power forwards in offensive rebound rate and 11th overall; unfortunately, he was unable to convert many of those offensive boards into buckets.

Scouting report: Williams is strong and willing to do the dirty work around the basket, but he's a poor finisher because of his lack of elevation and oftentimes can't get a shot off -- more than one delivery in 10 was blocked. He's good on the offensive glass because of his muscle and long arms but has to stop and gather himself before going up with a putback, and usually by then the defense has recovered. Defensively, Williams is a solid player, and if he's going to stick as a regular it will be because he does the heavy lifting at that end of the floor. He's a good shot-blocker and a physical post defender, and he plays hard.

Linebacker Finds Place in Dodger's Dugout

Fans at the Los Angeles Dodgers game Tuesday might notice the team's bat boy is particularly, um, large. That's because he is. All-Pro linebacker Junior Seau won't be suiting up for any NFL training camps this week. Instead, the 40-year-old will be shagging bats for a new, top-secret (or not?) show on the Versus network, according to people familiar with the program.

—Reed Albergotti

I wonder if he'll get caught for juicing and get suspended for 50 games and then raise questions about pats championship legitimacy?

i love it when stupid people say stupid things on the stupid internet.

mr. clucky

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A celebrity rooster and Miami Beach tourist favorite named Mr. Clucky could soon be evicted from the condo he shares with his owner.

The Miami Herald reports that a dramatic city hall plea from Mark Buckley wasn't enough to stop officials from giving city code officers authority to remove Mr. Clucky and his hen girlfriend, Wallflower.

Buckley was also ordered to pay a $50 fine for the rooster, known for perching on the handlebars of his bicycle.

Miami Beach code prohibits keeping poultry and other livestock in residential areas.

But there might still be hope for Mr. Cluckey: Buckley can ask city commissioners for an exception or appeal to the courts.

Mr. Clucky has become a favorite subject of tourist photos and was even grand marshal of a parade.
