Drive-by shooting mystifies Rye homeowner

RYE, new hampshire:

"Several days after someone shot at his million-dollar home in Rye, Peter Clark is at a loss for why someone would do such a thing and says he can't think of anyone he considers to be an enemy.

Clark said the shooting, which happened Friday afternoon, has not only left his family feeling nervous but also has consumed his entire neighborhood with fear. Police found bullet holes on both the first- and second-floor levels of the three-story home and bullet casings strewn all over the front lawn. Between 25 and 30 bullet holes were labeled on the exterior.

Clark said he's owned the home with his wife, Jennifer, for the past decade, but explained it's been in his family for 80 years."

one to three years for selling wal-mart bought, shiitake mushrooms???

union leader:

BRENTWOOD – A Kingston teen is headed to prison after pleading guilty to doctoring up store-bought shiitake mushrooms with blue food coloring and trying to sell them as a drug for $900.

Tucker Cockerline, 18, of 44 Marshall Road, was sentenced to one to three years in state prison Friday for his role in the fake hallucinogenic mushroom scheme that crumbled when he sold them in an undercover police sting and was caught with the food coloring on his fingertips.

At a hearing in Rockingham County Superior Court, Cockerline pleaded guilty to charges of selling a substance reported to be a controlled drug and conspiracy to commit the sale of a drug.

Cockerline was given another two- to four-year sentence that will be suspended for five years on good behavior after his release from prison. He was also fined a total of $750.

According to Assistant Rockingham County Attorney Charlene Dulac, the mushroom deal occurred Nov. 10, 2008, when a "cooperating individual" acting as a buyer met with a Kingston police officer and explained that plans were made to purchase a quarter pound of hallucinogenic mushrooms for $900 at a buy on Tucker Road in Kingston.

MJ

We were walking through midtown yesterday, and figured we'd cut through Times Square for the hell of it. People there looked kinda bummed, and I thought it was weird. Then I saw it come by on the ticker. Damn. As much of a circus the last 20 years of his life were, Michael killed it harder than anyone in his prime.

Sarah and I finally made it over to a Daily Show taping yesterday. Before the taping Jon came out to talk/warm up the audience, and someone asked him a question about his college, William & Mary. He then discovered that a relatively cute 18 year old girl and a painfully goofy 18 year old boy in another section would both be attending his alma mater in the fall, and subsequently did the best he could to get this kid laid.

Suprisingly, after taping the entire show, the producers talked with Jon for about five minutes before announcing that they would be retaping the entire first third of the episode because it had run too long. The rerun was pretty flat, and I thought it too bad that everyone would be stuck watching the shorter, crappier version that night. I later found out that the producers made the right call and went mostly with the original takes, and instead cut out about half of Cameron Diaz's incoherent babbling.

Overall it was a pretty mediocre episode to catch, especially since we just missed Bill Russell and Larry David earlier in the week, but a cool thing to see nonetheless.

Hometown Hero: Horace Seymour III

Once widely revered within the confines of Litchfield, NH for his youth league assistant coaching abilities, hilariously imitable voice, and second-to-none VHS porn collection, Horace Seymour III has officially hit rock bottom. Seymour was found guilty Friday for embezzling 135,000 dollars from the town of Litchfield during the years of his storied climb from lowly assistant coach of the underachieving Warrens Auto Body rec basketball team, to the head of the recreation department, and culminating at the lofty elected position of town treasurer.

Read the telegraph article here

He's definitely going to jail and I sort of feel bad for Horace's family but come on!! The skatepark went years during Horace's reign without a single repair until it was finally torn down for being unsafe. Knowing that skatepark money went to Chipper or Chubbalubs's four wheelers and Japanese cars really pisses me off. I think he should be jailed under the decking of a reconstructed mini-ramp at Darrah where we can throw empty tall boy's at him and make his ears ring with frontside disasters.

I definitely like the B side way better. "Whale Song" sounds like it could have been recorded at the same time as Lonesome Crowded West or Moon and Antartica which is a far cry from the straight pop that Modest Mouse have put out in the past two or three albums. If you like older Modest Mouse, check these out.

Ice Sheet Melting Faster Than Expected; Larger Contributor To Sea-level Rise Than Thought

The Greenland ice sheet is melting faster than expected, according to a new study led by a University of Alaska Fairbanks researcher and published in the journal Hydrological Processes.

Study results indicate that the ice sheet may be responsible for nearly 25 percent of global sea rise in the past 13 years. The study also shows that seas now are rising by more than 3 millimeters a year--more than 50 percent faster than the average for the 20th century.

Hamilton told police that the man then punched him in the mouth and grabbed his sandwich and left.

Police said Hamilton has a swollen lip and his face was covered in blood. The police report listed the value of the sandwich at 76 cents.

Police have not found the attacker."

i guess he had a stroke and the vet said my rents had no other choice..

it's a bummer but he had a great run. rest in peace buddy.

hank paulson: national hero.

real talk from matt taibbi:

"Hank Paulson is a national hero.

I said it last October and I'm sticking by it. And now, there's actual evidence to back me up. The TARP bailout worked. The Wall Street crisis is over."

-- Evan Newmark, "It's Time to Enshrine Hank Paulson as National Hero," Wall Street Journal.

So here's the letter I wrote to the Wall Street Journal after reading Evan Newmark's paean to Hank Paulson last week:

Dear WSJ,

Just out of curiosity -- did Evan Newmark ever work for Goldman, Sachs? And if the answer to the question is yes, don't you think that might have been a good fact to disclose before he fellated Hank Paulson in his "Mean Street" column?

Sincerely,
Matt Taibbi

"Can you imagine what a craven, bumlicking ass-goblin you'd have to be to get a job working for the Wall Street Journal, not mention up front that you used to be a Goldman, Sachs managing director, and then write a lengthy article calling your former boss a "national hero" -- in the middle of a sweeping financial crisis, one in which half the world is in a panic and the unemployment rate just hit a 25-year high? Behavior like this, you usually don't see it outside prison trusties who spend their evenings shining the guards' boots. I can't even think of a political press secretary who would sink that low. Hank Paulson, a hero? Are you fucking kidding us?

Exactly what part of Paulson's record is heroic, Evan? The part where he called up SEC director William Donaldson in 2004 and quietly arranged to get the state to drop capital requirements for the country's top five investment banks? You remember that business, right, Evan? Your hero Paulson met with Donaldson and got the rules changed so that Goldman and four other banks no longer had to abide by the old restrictions that forced banks to actually have a dollar or two on hand for every ten or so they lent out. After that, it was party time! Bear Stearns in just a few years had a debt-to-equity ration of 33-1! Lehman's went to 32-1. By an amazing coincidence, both of these companies exploded just a few years after that meeting, and all of the rest of us, Evan, ended up footing the bill, thanks to a state-sponsored rescue of Bear and a much larger massive bailout of Wall Street in general, necessitated in large part by the damage caused by the chaos surrounding Lehman's collapse.

Meanwhile your own Goldman, Sachs ended up with a 22:1 debt-to-equity ratio a few years following that meeting, a number that would have been much higher if one didn't count the hedges Goldman bought through a company called AIG. Thanks in large part to Paulson's leadership in his last years as head of Goldman, the company was so massively over-leveraged that it would have gone under if AIG -- which owed Goldman billions when it went into its death spiral last September -- had been allowed to collapse. But thanks to Hank Paulson, who heroically stepped in and gave AIG $80 billion the same weekend he allowed one of Goldman's last key competitors, Lehman, to collapse, Goldman didn't have to go without that money; $13 billion of the AIG bailout went straight to Goldman. So I guess we have Paulson to thank for the fact that he used about $13 billion of our taxpayer money to essentially bail out his own fuckups. I mean, that's heroism if I've ever seen it. Audie Murphy has nothing on that. Sit your asses back down, Harriet Tubman, Thomas More, Gandhi and Jesus Christ. Hank Paulson is in the house!

Or maybe it was Paulson's foresight in heading off the crisis before it happened that inspired you? Maybe it was the way Paulson pronounced the subprime fallout "contained" in 2007 and called the economy the "strongest in decades?" Or maybe it was the way he remained calm last July, saying that it was a "very manageable situation" and "our regulators are on top of it?" Remember how he said all that shit, Evan, just about six weeks before the world exploded? Remember that Henry Paulson was actually in charge of regulating the financial environment during the last years of the crisis and did nothing as his buddies on Wall Street built one gigantic mountain of leverage after another, gashing underwriting standards across the board, saddling the country with a generation of toxic assets that all of the rest of us will be paying for in taxes (instead of, for instance, a health care program, which we can now no longer afford) for the next fifty fucking years? Do you remember that part?

Or was it his non-intervention last summer when gas prices hit $4.50 a gallon thanks again to his old buddies at Goldman and Morgan Stanley, who juiced the commodities market with so much speculative cash that oil prices soared despite the fact that supply was up and demand was down all year? Do you remember that part? How about the way food prices soared thanks to the same commodities speculators? According to the World Food Program at the UN, about 100 million people joined the ranks of the hungry last year during the commodities spike.

Or maybe it was the way the Treasury Department refused to tell the Congress really anything at all about how it chose whom to give TARP money to; how when the Congressional Oversight Panel asked Paulson what criteria he was using to decide who gets bailout money and who doesn't, he sent Congress back a copy of a TARP application form. Maybe it was that. Or maybe it was the way Paulson got a $200 million tax deferral thanks to an obscure rule that allows executives who join the government to defer taxes on their holdings. That means that not only did Paulson use billions of our money to bail out his own mistakes, he managed to use a loophole to get out of paying his fair share of that same bailout.

Even if it weren't about five years too early to make any kind of judgment at all about whether or not TARP helped, the notion that Henry Paulson is a hero is complete and utter madness because TARP would never have been necessary if someone, anyone who wasn't a greed-addled incompetent like Paulson had actually been regulating the economy in the last years of the Bush adminstration. If anyone besides Paulson had been running Goldman Sachs earlier in this decade -- if a person with a serious brain injury had been in his place, for instance, or a horse, or a head of lettuce -- we'd all be better off today, because there wouldn't be so many toxic Goldman-underwritten mortgage-backed CDOs on the market. We, all of us, are paying the freight for assholes like Paulson, and like you, for that matter. And while we're getting over it, slowly, you're really not helping when you open your mouth and pat yourself on the back for all the good deeds you've done. Spare, us, okay? Just give it up."

Wait, We're Actually Getting Money Back?

The Treasury Department cleared the way for 10 big banks on Tuesday to start repaying billions of dollars in taxpayer aid, a crucial step in easing the government’s grip after an unprecedented series of interventions. JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs were among the banks deemed strong enough by federal regulators to leave the Troubled Asset Relief Program, or TARP, after months of lobbying and strong performances on recent stress tests. The 10 banks are expected to return about $68.3 billion to the Treasury Department, more than double the administration’s initial estimate of about $25 billion in funds to be returned this year. The Treasury did not identify the banks, allowing them to come forward individually. They include American Express, Bank of New York Mellon, the BB&T Corporation, Capital One Financial, the State Street Corporation and US Bancorp. Along with JPMorgan and Goldman, they all passed the stress test and applied to return their TARP funds. Another bank, Morgan Stanley, which needed to raise $1.8 billion after the stress test, also received permission, as did Northern Trust, a large custodial bank that did not undergo the stress test.

President Obama, in comments Tuesday, said that taxpayers would “actually turned a profit” from the deal, but he also offered banks a warning. “I also want to say: the return of these funds does not provide forgiveness for past excesses or permission for future misdeeds,” Mr. Obama said. “It is critical that as our country emerges from this period of crisis, that we learn its lessons; that those who seek reward do not take reckless risk; that short-term gains are not pursued without regard for long-term consequences.” The $68.3 billion represents about a quarter of the TARP money given to banks. So far, 22 small community banks have been allowed to return $1.9 billion in government money. Within the next few days, the big banks will be able to wire the money back to the Treasury Department. Still, they will not fully get out from under the government’s thumb until they rid themselves of warrants giving taxpayers a share of the potential upside on their investments.

NYTimes

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A good sign on the whole, although this seems to have as much to do with banks desire to get away from some of the TARP restrictions as anything else. However, the couldn't leave if they weren't healthy enough, and in doing this they will significantly surpass the amount of repayment for 2009 set by the Obama administration. Hopefully this will ease the paranoia of a long-term government run banking system seen amongst some of those less grounded in reality...

so there was this dinner...

and the keynote speaker was a guy named "newt", who claims to be the posterboy for republican values. "newt" has been married three times. he even had his first wife finalize the divorce papers while she was still in the hospital recovering from cancer surgery. then, during the lewinsky scandal, "newt" was busy cheating on his second wife with his soon to be third wife.

let's see some highlights from the dinner:

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said President Barack Obama’s plan to fix the economy through stimulus spending and government intervention to boost companies like General Motors Corp. has "already failed."

"Bureaucrats managing companies does not work, politicians dominating the economy does not work," Gingrich told about 2,000 Republicans who attended the event at the Washington Convention Center last night.

In introducing Gingrich, Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin called him the “architect of the last reform movement” and “the man of ideas.”

"Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said Obama has a "radical agenda." Republicans have "watched them take over banks, insurance companies, auto companies," he said, “and now they want to take over your health care.”

"We’re going to need some wins next November to slow down their agenda," said McConnell. House Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio said Democrats are using their control of Congress "to bury our children and the middle class under a mountain of debt."

luckily the guy who played a 1970s male prostitute and derek zoolander's dad chimed in with some real right-wing truthiness:

Actor Jon Voight, the master of ceremonies, opened the evening with a series of sharp attacks on Obama, something many Republican leaders have been hesitant to do in light of the president’s high approval ratings.

"We are becoming a weak nation," said Voight, calling Obama a "false prophet." Republicans need to find their way back to power to free the nation from "this Obama oppression," he said.

Both McConnell and Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah, who followed Voight, seemed pleasantly surprised.

"I’m still just reveling that someone from Hollywood made a speech like that. I hope you’re going to be able to find work after this," said McConnell. "I really enjoyed that."

and finally, the punchline:

The dinner, which included 150 members of Congress, raised $14.5 million for the Republican House and Senate campaign committees."

Gun-loving pastor to his flock: Piece be with you

"LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A Kentucky pastor is inviting his flock to bring guns to church to celebrate the Fourth of July and the Second Amendment.

New Bethel Church is welcoming "responsible handgun owners" to wear their firearms inside the church June 27, a Saturday. An ad says there will be a handgun raffle, patriotic music and information on gun safety.

"We're just going to celebrate the upcoming theme of the birth of our nation," said pastor Ken Pagano. "And we're not ashamed to say that there was a strong belief in God and firearms — without that this country wouldn't be here."

The guns must be unloaded and private security will check visitors at the door, Pagano said.

He said recent church shootings, including the killing Sunday of a late-term abortion provider in Kansas, which he condemned, highlight the need to promote safe gun ownership. The New Bethel Church event was planned months before Dr. George Tiller was shot to death in a Wichita church.

Kentucky allows residents to openly carry guns in public with some restrictions. Gun owners carrying concealed weapons must have state-issued permits and can't take them to schools, jails or bars, among other exceptions.

Pagano's Protestant church, which attracts up to 150 people to Sunday services, is a member of the Assemblies of God. The former Marine and handgun instructor said he expected some backlash, but has heard only a "little bit" of criticism of the gun event.

John Phillips, an Arkansas pastor who was shot twice while leading a service at his former church in 1986, said a house of worship is no place for firearms."

It is him! Paul Baldwin strikes the stoop...

After reading the post regarding Paul Baldwin's recent arrest I had a vague recollection from a couple weekends ago about meeting a drunkard that sounded a lot like the guy from the newspaper article. I found a picture to verify that Paul Baldwin had in fact harassed the stoop. After pestering us for beer for over an hour, Fitz orchestrated a cow tipping of this loser and he nearly fell over an cracked his head on the sidewalk. Even after the cow tipping it took all of telling him to scram off before he finally left. Hopefully he keeps his grimy paws off our DVDs.

guy from egypt cuts off his penis...

AP:

CAIRO – A 25-year-old Egyptian man cut off his own penis to spite his family after he was refused permission to marry a girl from a lower class family, police reported Sunday.

After unsuccessfully petitioning his father for two years to marry the girl, the man heated up a knife and sliced off his reproductive organ, said a police official.

The young man came from a prominent family in the southern Egyptian province of Qena, one of Egypt's poorest and most conservative areas that is also home to the famed ancient Egyptian ruins of Luxor.

The man was rushed to the hospital but doctors were unable to reattach the severed member, the official added citing the police report filed after the incident.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak with the press, added that the man was still recovering in the hospital.

Traditionally, marriages in these conservative part of southern Egypt are between similar social classes and often within the same extended families — and are rarely for love.

NH man arrested for the 153rd time to plead guilty

fosters daily democrat:

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – A man has been arrested for the 153rd time, this time after he was accused of punching someone in the face over the weekend. Paul Baldwin, 49, told a judge Monday he plans to plead guilty to the assault, along with trespassing and alcohol charges. He said he's had a long battle with alcohol and was trying to correct the problem during his most recent one-year jail term, which ended last week.

The Foster's Daily Democrat newspaper said Baldwin's record dates to 1984 and includes 152 other arrests, eight trespass orders, 75 citations, four Social Security aliases and 17 name aliases.

Prosecutor Rena DiLando said she didn't have time to read Baldwin's full criminal record because it's so long.
