A Serious Man
Another masterpiece from the Cohen Brothers. Although not their funniest, as an overall film I think this might be their best comedy, as well as the best film I've seen from 2009. Go watch it.

WTF?
Soccernet's Ives Galarcep has a fantastic update on U.S. national striker Charlie Davies and his miraculous recovery from the deadly car accident he was involved in last October. After breaking his right femur and tibia, left elbow, suffering facial fractures and a lacerated bladder (which somehow sounds like the most awful injury of the bunch) in the crash that killed the other passenger in the car that carried him, Davies is already jogging and doing agility drills just four months later.
Says Ives:
What does this progress mean, exactly? It means that, barring any setbacks, Davies could be back on the field with club team FC Sochaux by April, meaning his chances of playing for the United States in June's World Cup should no longer be seen as a shattered dream.
"Charlie is pretty much light years ahead of where anybody would tell you he should be," said Jim Hashimoto, the former U.S. national team trainer who is overseeing Davies rehabilitation. "When everybody heard about the accident, including myself, it was like, 'OK, this is going to be a long one' -- and it's still going to be a long one, but to see his progress is pretty amazing."
And amazing sounds like an understatement. The report goes on to say how Davies has already recovered from all of his broken bones, has gained back the 15 lbs. he lost because of the six surgeries he's had so far and only has one more on his elbow before he plans on returning to Sochaux for training by the end of February. Wow.
Now, broken bones and surgeries are one thing -- lots of people go through that and come back good as new -- but if you're somehow still doubting Davies' resiliency and superhumanness, read this:
The swelling in his face that was so evident during his interview with ESPN last November has subsided, though a shorter haircut reveals the scar he has from ear to ear arcing over the top of his skull. That scar came after doctors peeled his face off down to his chin in order to repair the multiple fractures that left his facial bones a shattered mess.
The doctors peeled his face off to fix his shattered skull? That's like Terminator type stuff.
Says Davies himself:
"I know I can come back and be one of the best strikers in the world. I know with the improvement that I'm making, if I can continue that with this new feeling I have now, it's going to be tough to stop me."
Yeah, he's definitely a Terminator.
Obama Plans for a Spending Freeze
"A spending freeze? That’s the brilliant response of the Obama team to their first serious political setback?
It’s appalling on every level.
It’s bad economics, depressing demand when the economy is still suffering from mass unemployment. Jonathan Zasloff writes that Obama seems to have decided to fire Tim Geithner and replace him with “the rotting corpse of Andrew Mellon” (Mellon was Herbert Hoover’s Treasury Secretary, who according to Hoover told him to “liquidate the workers, liquidate the farmers, purge the rottenness”.)
It’s bad long-run fiscal policy, shifting attention away from the essential need to reform health care and focusing on small change instead.
And it’s a betrayal of everything Obama’s supporters thought they were working for. Just like that, Obama has embraced and validated the Republican world-view — and more specifically, he has embraced the policy ideas of the man he defeated in 2008. A correspondent writes, “I feel like an idiot for supporting this guy.”
Now, I still cling to a fantasy: maybe, just possibly, Obama is going to tie his spending freeze to something that would actually help the economy, like an employment tax credit. (No, trivial tax breaks don’t count). There has, however, been no hint of anything like that in the reports so far. Right now, this looks like pure disaster."

A conservative activist who posed as a pimp to target the community-organizing group ACORN and the son of a federal prosecutor were among four people arrested by the FBI and accused of trying to interfere with phones at Sen. Mary Landrieu's office.
Activist James O'Keefe, 25, was already in Landrieu's New Orleans office Monday when Robert Flanagan and Joseph Basel, both 24, showed up claiming to be telephone repairmen, U.S. Attorney Jim Letten's office said Tuesday. Letten says O'Keefe recorded the two with his cell phone.

Barbara doesn't beat around the bush.
In 1984, Bush told the press that she could not say on television what she thought of then Vice-Presidential candidate Garladine Ferraro, but "it rhymes with rich".
During her husband's 1992 presidential campaign, Barbara Bush stated that abortion is a personal matter and argued that the Republican Party platform should not take a stand on it, saying that "The personal things should be left out of, in my opinion, platforms and conventions." Her personal views on abortion were not known, although her friends reported at that time that she "privately supported abortion rights".
Commenting on the Monico Lewinsky scandal, Bush said, "Clinton lied. A man might forget where he parks or where he lives, but he never forgets oral sex, no matter how bad it is."
On March 18, 2003, two days before the beginning of the war on Iraq, ABC's Good Morning America asked her about her family's television viewing habits; she replied:
While visiting a Houston relief center for people displaced by Hurricane Katrina, Bush told the radio program Marketplace,

If I Had a Hammer...
I might hammer Claude Francois' tongue to a wall. Francois' gig was to take American songs, have someone else translate them to French, and then go on to perform them cheesier than the most pungent Roquefort.
On a side note, Francois did write the French classic Comme D'Habitude, which he failed to claim rights for. Shortly after the song was released someone took the music, gave it to Frank Sinatra, and most of us now know this song as My Way. At the same time, David Bowie wanted to adapt Comme D'Habitude. When he heard My Way, he was so disgusted with what Sinatra had done with the song that he wrote Life On Mars by stealing the music from Comme D'Habitude and vocally mocking Sinatra's performance of My Way.

Corporations are people and buying politicians is free speech
The decision seeks to let voters choose for themselves among a multitude of voices and ideas when they go to the polls, but it will also increase the power of organized interest groups at the expense of candidates and political parties. It is expected to unleash a torrent of attack advertisements from outside groups aiming to sway voters, without any candidate having to take the criticism for dirty campaigning. The biggest beneficiaries might be well-placed incumbents whose favor companies and interests groups are eager to court. It could also have a big impact on state and local governments, where a few million dollars can have more influence on elections.
The ruling comes at a time when influence-seekers of all kinds have special incentives to open their wallets. Amid the economic crisis, the Obama administration and Congressional Democrats are trying to rewrite the rules for broad swaths of the economy, from Detroit to Wall Street. Republicans, meanwhile, see a chance for major gains in November. Democrats predicted that Republicans would benefit most from the decision, because they are the traditional allies of big corporations, who have more money to spend than unions. In a statement shortly after the decision, President Obama called it “a green light to a new stampede of special interest money in our politics.”

Sigh. Bad news bears for politics in the home country these days. You can read the decision here, which apparently includes 90 pages of real talk from Justice Stevens in dissent, which I'm looking forward to reading this weekend. On that note, who wants to join Fantasy SCOTUS? I set up a party intellectuals team, so we can all attempt to out-predict future Ivy League law student and Mensa member WrongEmBoyo, as to the slow decline of our republic. I figure Dave might be game?

Carp-e Diem
So I'm not sure if anyone remembers the video of rednex shooting jumping carp with their bows and arrows, but these carp have been taking over the world. They are called asian carp, and they are just about the most invasive, and ugly, species to ever hit the states. Since the early nineties they have been slowly working their way toward the great lakes, or about 7billion in fishing industry and 20% of the earths fresh water, and scientists are freaked the fuck out. They even built a barrier to keep them out. Unfortunately, according to this nytimes article, they have discovered the first dna traces of this carp in lake michigan, and where there's sperm, there's a spunk gun.
This is very horrible news, and is awful for anyone who fishes in that area or is a supporter of respectable wildlife. Things like this just make you realize how many dumbasses don't get the harm of having stupidass "coy ponds".

this is a sweet art band from LA, blending off tempo rhythms, synths, bizarre melodies and interpretive dance. being minimalistic their songs are catchy and sometimes disturbing and all the while being incredibly interesting.
this is a live video from a performance on an estonian tv show. the interview is enlightening as to their style and influences, but its hard to hear because of the translator. one fascinating influence they note is that they are most influenced by film.

marty the liaison.
for some reason when filming a television show or movie in newport beach, california, the town requires a "liaison" or town employee to oversee the shoot.
the town sent marty. marty overstepped his authoritative presence and never stopped talking. most of his stories were complete bullshit but all were entertaining:
-Marty claimed to have picked up a hitch-hiker who "smelled awful and wore a dirty coat". After not being able to take the stench any longer he kicked the hitcher out. that hitch-hiker was bob dylan.
-In the late 60's marty claimed he would "head over to Joan's (Baez) place while she played guitar naked for me".
-Marty claimed to have attended the filming of the last waltz and hung out backstage because in his words, "I wasn't there for the music, heck no! They had one of the best craft services tables I'd ever seen!"
when marty wasn't exaggerating or outright lying he spent his day eating food, getting other people off task, being racist or sleeping in the sun.
oh marty...
Garnett Voted Worst Trash Talker
Sports Illustrated - [Kevin] Garnett received 62 percent of the vote in a Sports Illustrated poll of 173 league players who were asked to name the worst trash talker in the league. The second-place finisher -- the Lakers' Kobe Bryant -- had 7 percent.
Garnett, however, isn't the only loudmouth on the Celts if the league's players are to be believed. Paul Pierce was third in the voting with 5 percent and Rasheed Wallace tied for fourth with 3 percent, giving Boston three of the top five trash-talkers in the league.
I stole this directly off the celtics blog. The staggering disparity between K.G. and the second place finisher, Kobe Bryant is incredible, along with the fact that Paul Pierce and Sheedy finished in third and fourth... Celtics, Celtics, Celtics
jay reatard pt. III
Speaking of Death + Taxes, they have a really good Jay Reatard cover story that ran a couple months ago. Definitely worth reading. He certainly liked to drink. His apartment doesn't sound too much different than the Toast or the Blem. It's also interesting to hear how he felt about death.
"Close to dawn I find my way back to my hotel to prep for the next day’s photo shoot. When we finally do connect the next day it’s around four p.m., and Jay is exhausted. After I left he found an all-night bar and stayed out until ten a.m. When photographer Ray Lego and I get to his house around five, we find Jay feeling lethargic and subdued. There are empty beers and discarded jeans on the floor, and the needle bumps at the end of a record that has finished playing but has sat spinning idly for hours. Jay revs himself up enough to come to life for our shoot, and, knees bouncing, insists on playing us one more track from a metal band he used to play with before we head out.
But his mood stays relatively somber throughout the day. Posing stoically in front of the Mississippi river for the camera, he offers out of nowhere, “This is a dead guy’s shirt.” “What?” I ask, not sure if I’ve heard him correctly. He tells me he found his house through someone his father knew—someone had died, and when Jay moved in there were still some items in the house. He found this tuxedo T-shirt, and liked it, so he kept it.
Reatard seems oddly both more sclerotic and more sensitive about death than most, possibly because he’s seen more of it than many people his age, and the subject comes up a few times throughout the day. He’s clearly upset over the recent loss of a friend who died of cancer, whose funeral he wanted to pay for, but who passed before Reatard could get the money to him. On the other hand, when DJ AM, ex-boyfriend of Mandy Moore, was recently found dead with an Adderal pill stuck to his tongue, Reatard’s reaction was to prank Ryan Adams, Moore’s current husband and his friend, by emailing a photo of himself playing dead, complete with a dummy pill stuck to his dangling tongue."

Jay Reatard Dies in His Sleep
The Commercial Appeal - Memphis musician Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr., better known as Jay Reatard, was found dead in his home in Midtown's Cooper-Young neighborhood this morning, according to family and friends. He was 29.
Lindsey was found in his home on Meda around 3:30 a.m., Memphis Police spokesman Jennifer Robinson said. Friends said his roommate found Lindsey in bed.
Homicide investigators have opened an investigation into Lindsey's death, Robinson said. Such an investigation is typical for an unexpected death and doesn't necessarily indicate any evidence of foul play.
Damn what a shame
First Canine Blogger on Record!
Associated Press: It is reported that the first blog post credited to a dog was discovered today. On the relatively unknown blog "Party Intellectuals" apparently a Black Labrador Retriever that goes by the surname "DC Gravy" created and blogged a post titled, "Tell us how you really buddy." Although the post is irrelevant and completely incoherent it is remarkable that an animal with such limited intelligence and paws could perform the necessary functions to blog. While in the blogosphere there is much speculation that this is merely some sort of practical joke, or perhaps the result of someone with a mental handicap this story has captured the imagination of thousand of gullible bloggers. There has been a flurry of conversation on the blog regarding whether this is an amazing leap in canine intelligence or merely some moron with access to a computer. For DC Gravy's sake we all can only hope its the former.

Glenn Beck Gets Massive Erection...
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Sarah Palin, former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate, will return to her broadcast roots and take her conservative message to Fox News as a regular commentator, the cable channel announced Monday.
"I am thrilled to be joining the great talent and management team at Fox News," Palin said in a statement posted on the network's Web site. "It's wonderful to be part of a place that so values fair and balanced news."
Fox said that according to the multiyear deal, Palin will offer political commentary and analysis on the cable channel, as well as Fox's Web site, radio network and business cable channel.
Man this is great. I love how the first Sarah Palin quote of the article is just blatant stupidity. God I hope she runs in 2012.

it's almost like a dream. sequences happen, and images come crashing onto the screen and just as abruptly disappear. a lot of the movie wasn't planned. meaning, anger just filmed what was in front of him, he didn't set up scenes and most of the bikers were guys he met in coney island while he was staying with a friend. he said it was "the closest I've ever come to a documentary, but I was just filming what was happening."
it really is amazing, and so is the soundtrack.

Another sign the singularity is Real
so according to this new york times article, companies are beginning to competitively battle over 3d television. These tvs will be marketed toward the moderately wealthy super nerd at first, but almost everyone seems to expect this to evolve into a full on three dimensional porno viewing experience shared by everyone. It will be quite interesting to see if 3d in television. It could also revolutionize video gaming to the point of realistic 3d virtual reality. All that seems to be clear for sure is that the world is going to continue in a perdictable pattern. The poor will fall behind and the rich will just keep getting nerdier.

DOJ - ya blew it
In a significant blow to the Justice Department, a federal judge on Thursday threw out the indictment of five former Blackwater security guards over a shooting in Baghdad in 2007 that left 17 Iraqis dead and about 20 wounded. The judge cited misuse of statements made by the guards in his decision, which brought to a sudden halt one of the highest-profile prosecutions to arise from the Iraq war. The shooting at Nisour Square frayed relations between the Iraqi government and the Bush administration and put a spotlight on the United States’ growing reliance on private security contractors in war zones. Investigators concluded that the guards had indiscriminately fired on unarmed civilians in an unprovoked and unjustified assault near the crowded traffic circle on Sept. 16, 2007. The guards contended that they had been ambushed by insurgents and fired in self-defense.
A trial on manslaughter and firearm offenses was planned for February, and the preliminary proceedings had been closely watched in the United States and Iraq. But in a 90-page opinion, Judge Ricardo M. Urbina of Federal District Court in Washington wrote that the government’s mishandling of the case “requires dismissal of the indictment against all the defendants.”
The guards had been told by State Department investigators that they could be fired if they did not talk about the case, but that whatever they said would not be used against them in any criminal proceeding. Nevertheless, Judge Urbina found that “in their zeal to bring charges,” investigators and prosecutors had extensively used those statements, disregarding “the warning of experienced, senior prosecutors” that “the course of action threatened the viability of prosecution.”
“The explanations offered by the prosecutors and investigators in an attempt to justify their actions and persuade the court that they did not use the defendants’ compelled testimony were all too often contradictory, unbelievable and lacking in credibility,” Judge Urbina wrote.
The judge also criticized prosecutors for withholding “substantial exculpatory evidence” from the grand jury that indicted the defendants, as well as for presenting “distorted versions” of witnesses’ testimony and improperly telling the grand jury that some incriminating statements had been made by the defendants but were being withheld.
Full NYT article
Its a shame that these guys got off, but I guess there's still hope;
"The families of several of the Iraqis who were killed have filed a civil lawsuit against the company, which has changed its name to Xe Services.
In addition, a grand jury in North Carolina, where Xe is based, is conducting a broad investigation into the company, which includes accusations of weapons smuggling and bribery of Iraqi officials in an attempt to ensure it would get approvals to continue operating in Iraq."
