FREE POLANSKI

In a surprising move arranged by prosecutors in Los Angeles and Washington, the authorities in Switzerland arrested the film director Roman Polanski late Saturday as he arrived at the Zurich airport, paving the way for his possible extradition to the United States in connection with a 32-year-old sex case. Mr. Polanski, 76, a French citizen, was detained as he arrived to receive an award at the Zurich Film Festival. Although he is expected to oppose extradition, the arrest raised a strong possibility that Mr. Polanski would be returned to the United States to face sentencing under his conviction for having had sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977. The arrest came as a shock to Mr. Polanski and those who have worked closely with him both on movies and in a continuing attempt to lift the outstanding arrest warrant against him. He had just finished shooting a film in Germany and often travels to Switzerland, where he maintains a home.

In Paris the French culture minister, Frédéric Mitterrand, said in a statement that he was astonished by the arrest. In a separate statement the French foreign minister, Bernard Kouchner, said he had spoken with his Swiss counterpart and communicated “the desire of the French authorities that the rights of Mr. Polanski be fully respected and that this affair rapidly find a favorable resolution.” The Swiss Justice Ministry said in a statement that Mr. Polanski, the director of celebrated films like “Chinatown” and “Rosemary’s Baby,” was put in “provisional detention” pending extradition based on the arrest warrant from the United States. “Whether Roman Polanski will be effectively extradited to the U.S.A. or not can be established only after the extradition process judicially has been finalized,” the statement said. The ministry’s statement added that Mr. Polanski could fight extradition in various courts.

Everyone should really watch Wanted and Desired to get a full understanding of the Polanski case. Both the defense and prosecution lay out how fucked the judge was throughout the film in interviews. An embarrassment to the American criminal justice system. Polanski should have served probation lake everyone else who committed the same crime in California and gone on with his career.

the "2010 Great American Conservative Women Calendar"

brought to you by the "Clare Booth Luce Policy Institute"

a calendar honoring the scariest woman on earth just in time for halloween...

this is a deep-seeded, "family values" conspiracy designed to keep republican leadership and peasants alike from cheating on their wives by never being able to obtain an erection again. the picture of ann coulter could kill even the most hard fought, middle-aged, levitra induced "half-chub."

sketchy arrest.

i don't like seeing guys in army fatigues quickly stuffing somebody, (who appears weak and unarmed), into an unmarked car and disappearing into a cloud of tear gas. call me crazy i guess.

granted, i do not know the exact details surrounding the footage but fuck it. i wonder what the reaction would've been if even half of the g20 protesters showed up with semi-automatic weapons "demonstrating their constitutional right" to bear arms...

Pitchfork's Languid Prose

I complement Pitchforks romantic rhetoric.

Australian band the Middle East released their 5 song EP, Recordings of the Middle East, in their home country last year. This year they're making it available in the U.S. for the first time on October 27, or you can download it now through the band's MySpace. The first track is called "The Darkest Side", a simple, finger-plucked acoustic affair with alternating and harmonizing vocals that lend the hushed track a sense of beleaguered hope.

I do enjoy the band title track in a remorseful sense. The Refrain had some hopeful harmonies.

can you say "conspiracy"?

Attorney: OKC bombing tapes appear edited

OKLAHOMA CITY – Long-secret security tapes showing the chaos immediately after the 1995 bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building are blank in the minutes before the blast and appear to have been edited, an attorney who obtained the recordings said Sunday.

"The real story is what's missing," said Jesse Trentadue, a Salt Lake City attorney who obtained the recordings through the federal Freedom of Information Act as part of an unofficial inquiry he is conducting into the April 19, 1995, bombing that killed 168 people and injured hundreds more.

Trentadue gave copies of the tapes to The Oklahoman newspaper, which posted them online and provided copies to The Associated Press.

The tapes turned over by the FBI came from security cameras various companies had mounted outside office buildings near the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. They are blank at points before 9:02 a.m., when a truck bomb carrying a 4,000 pound fertilizer-and-fuel-oil bomb detonated in front of the building, Trentadue said.

"Four cameras in four different locations going blank at basically the same time on the morning of April 19, 1995. There ain't no such thing as a coincidence," Trentadue said.

Great point, coach

I know this is old news, but the quote at 3:46 is a classic, and I effectively haven't had internet for three months, or else I would have posted it then. Bonus points for a Howard Beale reference on the Glenn Beck show.

date movie of the summer

Antichrist-the new film from Danish homeboy Lars Von Trier, director of such films as Dancer in the Dark, Insomnia (the original, not the shitty American remake starring a washed up Pacino and Robin Williams) and co founder of the arguably pretentious Dogma 95 movement. The film caused a stir at Cannes, and everywhere else, as it apparently features quite a lot sexual mutilation, to the extent that some have claimed it borders on torture porn. At least four people fainted during the screening at Cannes, do to the graphic mutilation scenes. The Ecumenical Jury at Cannes, (who FYI have the stated purpose to "honour works of quality which touch the spiritual dimension of our existence") went as far as to give the film an anti-award (the first of its kind), calling it "the most misogynist movie from the self-proclaimed biggest director in the world". Despite the widespread claims of misogyny, both within and outside of the Ecumenical Jury, the lead actress Charlotte Gainsbourg was given the award for best lead actress. The film opened to widespread praise in Denmark, from both critics and audiences alike, but has had a mixed reception here in the States. I still might try to catch this before I roll out of NY, but even the local indie theaters around me don't seem to be carrying it.

ps - the first person to splice Willem Defoe's scenes from this film with ones from the Last Temptation of Christ into some sort of a narrative and post it on youtube will be named an honorary blog member.

Big Food vs. Big Insurance

Michael Pollan's ny times op-ed about America's real health crisis.

"our success in bringing health care costs under control ultimately depends on whether Washington can summon the political will to take on and reform a second, even more powerful industry: the food industry."

If you're unfamiliar with his work, Michael Pollan is a captivating author with concrete, progressive yet rational ideas about the food industry. He has a few great books, my two favorite being The Omnivore's Dilemma (a natural history of 4 meals) and The Botany of Desire (where he looks at how 4 plants (marijuana, the potato, the tulip, and the apple) have interacted, co-evolved, and served human desires throughout history. Definitely check one of them out if you're looking for a book right now. He also tears Whole Foods and the organic food industry's asshole apart in The Omnivore's Dilemma, which rules. Take that yuppies.

He has a great article about growing poppies as well that I'll post on here when I find it if anyone is interested.

Images of Edie Sedgwick, a Warhol girl who did the whole routine...starred in his films, had a VU song about her, lived in the Chelsea Hotel, slept with Bob Dylan, and overdosed on drugs once the 60's were over. Great song though, for realz.

A True Sucker Punch

Minutes after a disheartening loss to Boise State in the highly anticipated kickoff to the college football season on Thursday night, Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount threw a punch that sent an opponent to his knees and placed an exclamation point on what has been a tawdry month for big-time college athletics

Blount, who was suspended Friday for the rest of the season, apologized. “I just kind of lost my head,” he said after the game. “A couple of players started pushing, and that’s when I lost my head. I lost my temper. I apologize.”

Hung like a horse

As if normal college activist groups weren't annoying enough...ladies and gentleman the UT College Republicans

"UTexas College Republicans are compiling a list of liberal professors who they claimed have a bias against conservative students.

The list will include professors who students say have let their political views interfere with the way they interact with students in the classroom."

College Republicans to identify liberal professors

----------------------------------------
y'all remember "conservative coming out day" at UNH? well, here the college republicans spend their time passing out far right health care reform handouts and also handout the bible once a week. UT is like a bible belt inside of Austin.
