Hard Time for Antoine?

"On May 9 in Las Vegas, Walker faces felony charges resulting from a series of 10 bad checks written to three casinos in 2008 and 2009. In an attempt to resolve the case, Walker had agreed to make installment payments to the casinos, but he has not made a payment in several months.

Time behind bars appears to be a certainty for Walker. In a nearly identical case last week in Las Vegas, a gambler who wrote a series of bad checks was sentenced to a prison term of 19 to 48 months. The severity of that sentence, according to Clark County assistant district attorney Bernard Zadrowski (who is also prosecuting Walker) was based on the gambler's pattern of refusing to pay debts other than the casino debts."

It would be a shame to throw the guy in prison and prevent him from earning money (and thus having the money to pay back his debts). As washed up as he may seem, the guy was a multiple all star and is still younger than a lot of players (KG and Ray included). Maybe they can fly Tommy out as a character witness.

Water World

So, a group of Libertarians led by Milton Friedman's grandson and the founder of PayPal is progressing on its plans to create floating, start-up countries on the high seas. They essentially claim that the political freedom possible in such a "country" will enable them to experiment and create new forms of government, which could then be applied in real countries to solve the modern political problems that those countries seem unable to solve.

However, I fail to see how the lessons learned from a self-selected group of a few hundred or thousand well educated, wealthy individuals living on a ship is going to produce solutions for the governments of the real world. Many of the problems of modern democracies center around their large scale; the overwhelming influence of special interests and citizens inability to stay knowledgeable enough and engaged in the political process to counteract such special interests. And they seem even less useful in solving policy questions on education, international relations, etc.

More likely, they will simply set up a system of regulation free medical tourism and banking, and pass any negative externalities on to real countries while reaping generous, tax free profits.

two suns?

"Earth could be getting a second sun, at least temporarily.

Dr. Brad Carter, Senior Lecturer of Physics at the University of Southern Queensland, outlined the scenario to news.com.au. Betelgeuse, one of the night sky's brightest stars, is losing mass, indicating it is collapsing. It could run out of fuel and go super-nova at any time.

When that happens, for at least a few weeks, we'd see a second sun, Carter says. There may also be no night during that timeframe.

The Star Wars-esque scenario could happen by 2012, Carter says... or it could take longer. The explosion could also cause a neutron star or result in the formation of a black hole 1300 light years from Earth, reports news.com.au.

But doomsday sayers should be careful about speculation on this one. If the star does go super-nova, Earth will be showered with harmless particles, according to Carter. "They will flood through the Earth and bizarrely enough, even though the supernova we see visually will light up the night sky, 99 per cent of the energy in the supernova is released in these particles that will come through our bodies and through the Earth with absolutely no harm whatsoever," he told news.com.au."
