krush the kooks

This saturday I went and skated a ditch north of santa cruz up a trail from the highway 1. The place is pretty rugged but definitely one of the sickest spots I've ever been to. No dirty teens for miles, amazing views, and quirky DIY concrete.good graffiti everywhere
here's a short clip of a line I was trying to get downIf you want to see some people really kill it, check out the first minute or so of this Lakai video. Gunna try to hit this spot up a bunch in the coming weeks and stock some footy.

Faulkner Makes the South Cool

"If I could write all my work again, I am convinced that I would do it better, which is the healthiest condition for an artist. That's why he keeps on working, trying again; he believes each time that this time he will do it, bring it off. Of course he won't, which is why this condition is healthy. Once he did it, once he matched the work to the image, the dream, nothing would remain but to cut his throat, jump off the other side of that pinnacle of perfection into suicide."

----- William Faulkner

If it slipped your radar, The Paris Review recently made every interview with any author they ever gave available to the public at no cost. I'll likely be reading them constantly and giving updates, but a blog recently brought to my attention an interview with William Faulkner which actually managed to exceed my expectations of how awesome an Faulkner interview could actually be.

(not) the next great American novelist?

After mourning David Foster Wallace's death, literary critics began to try to identify the next great contemporary American novelist. I have not yet read a Jonathan Franzen novel, but the hype surrounding this author is absurd. Last month he was called the writer of our generation by The New Yorker yet denounced in Atlantic Monthly. From what I have read of Franzen, the chance of him being the one to fill dfw's shoes is near impossible, but most likely I'll be spending my Thanksgiving break in Austin with my nose in Freedom just to have a real opinion on it and to say that I did.

The main point of all this was to point out a recent review of the novel, but more importantly to share a very cool literary blog: http://biblioklept.org

Yes, I take requests

Judy Nylon should be every girl's role model. She is the Judy in Eno's "Back in in Judy's Jungle" and Eno even cites her as an influence (Eno has influences?!) as does John Cale. She was a leader amongst the No Wave crowd in New York way back when and instead of self promoting like some female musicians (cough, Nico, cough), it's difficult to even find a Judy Nylon CD. If you weren't there, you missed it. Below is the only recording I own of hers, a cover of Jailhouse Rock (better quality than the version in that video). I hope you enjoy.
